Filming practice

Since there was problems getting the big camera for our media film, we decided to practice on the flip cameras, to see how our film will look like if we filmed on them, because we know one group in our class did their entire film using a flip camera. Below is footage of us practicing outside, but you can hear the problems in the clip i.e. zoom and possible solutions i.e. borrowing another camera.

Below is another clip of us trying to do a tracking shot on the flip camera:

Final Poster

After receiving our audience feedback, we looked at our poster and tried to see if we could make any of the changes suggested to us on the poster. We was told that the font used for the tag line would be better if it was the same font that was used on the lower part of the poster. Another bit of advice given to us was to shorten the tag line, our teacher felt that the long tag line at the top of the poster did not look like conventional posters. We changed our poster in concordance with the advice given because we felt all of the feedback was good and sensible. We changed the tag line from 'have your ever felt that you are being watched' to 'your being watched'. This seemed much more effective than the previous which was too long, considering our film is a suspense film, and long sequences kill the suspense in movies, so we thought we should apply this to the tag line as well.

Radio Trailer

For our media coursework we were supposed to do two ansilery products for our short film, before we start doing our production work for our film. We decided to do a radio trailer and a poster. The Radio Trailer This is the link above we found on the internet, we foing the website useful as it gave us good advice on how to create the radio trailer. The link was set out clearly, so we found the instructions easy to follow. Below is the image of how to link on the website looks like.

Reading through the link, we found that we had to create a script for our radio trailer, this is below:

After we were satisfied with our script, we decided to go and find someone, who we felt voice would be well suited for our radio trailer and did some practice runs, so we could have a rough idea of how it would sound, we used a flip camera to do this

After we did some practice runs, we decided to create the radio trailer, by using the apple Mac in our school, we used an editing programme called final cut, which we will also be using later to edit our film footage. We recorded our teacher reading our radio trailer script on the flip camera, and then transfer the recording onto the computer and imported it onto final cut and then we took the audio from the clip and deleted the video, because we could only see his feet as you can see on the previous clip and for radio trailer you do not need a video. We then put some background music ontop our audio and then also recorded someones foot steps and put this sound into the start of our radio trailer, because we thought it linked nicely to our film idea, because the main plot is someone is being followed.

Below is a clip of our finished radio trailer:

Also we did some more audience research to find out what our target audience would like the title of our film to be the results are below:

Teaser poster

Our teaser poster is below, we decided to keep it simple by having it on a black background with white footprints to indicate that someone is being followed:

Ideas for the poster

We were looking at the internet for ideas for our film poster, and we came across this poster which will be shown below. We like to idea of the poster as it is dark, and shows a sense of fear, as it looks like someone is running away because they are being follow by whoever is in the truck. I like the use of light on the car and would use this concept and put eyes on our poster to show our main actor is being watched.

Poster Research

Our second ancillary task was to create a poster for our short film, we found that there are two types of posters in the film industry. One is a teaser poster, this is an early promotional film poster that has a basic image or design, but does not reveal too much information about the film. The second poster is an advertisment poster which is used to draw the audiences attention, the image is usually big and eye catching, with important information like who is starring, the film company and the tag line for the film. Our group decided that we wanted to create both posters, below is two poster images from the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the image on the left is a teaser poster and the image on the right is the advertisment poster, you can see the difference between the two posters.

Suspense and Thriller research

Here is an example of a good suspense short film, that I feel conveys the codes and conventions of a short suspense film:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALGA6UclVd4

This is good, because althought it is in daylight, it is very fast pace this is because of the camera movements and shots. The music used is not an obvious suspenseful type of music, at the end there is a twist which is quite comedic.

Pictures and idea for our advertisement poster

Since the main plot of our film is about someone feeling as though they are being followed by someone behind them, we decided that we wanted to do an other the shoulder shot of the youth behind our main actor, this would give the audience a sense that our main actor is being watched by the youth behind. We first started to take pictures of our actors inside our school building, and turned the lights off. We liked our images, but there were green doors and a tv above our actors head, and we felt that these would be too difficult to edit. also our whole film is outside so we thought it might be weird having the poster image inside. This is how our first attempt of images looked like:

After looking at these photos, we decided to take pictures outside of our main actors, this is how it looks below:

As you can see the image is in daylight, and does not look really scary, however we then uploaded our image on to photo shop and started to experiment with the contrast settings.

Treatment

Film title: Stalked

Synopsis

On Scott's way home from work, he stops by a shop to buy himself a drink, everything seems fine, as he exits the shop he goes to put his wallet in his pocket, but doesn't realise he actually drops it on the floor. He continues his journey home, and then sees a rough looking man that gives him an intimidating look. Scott feels scared and is worried he is going to get robbed, as he remembers being mugged before. So his gut instinct makes him walk quicker. The man sees Scott's wallet and picks it, he tries to give it back to Scott by following him. Scott panicks and runs down the next road he sees in an attempt to get away, however he gets trapped in a dead end. Scott sees the man, and starts preparing to defend himself not realising the man only wants to return his wallet. When Scott realises this he feels better and thanks the man for returning his wallet and go their seperate ways ... But are things really ok.

Scene 1
Scott's on his way home from work and comes out of the train station, then he goes into a shop and buys a drink, when he comes out he drops his wallet without realising and makes his way to the busstop, passing a rough looking man, who gives him a menacing look. As he's waiting for the bus, he turns back and looks at the man, who is staring at him. The man picks up his wallet.(but the audience doesn't know)

Scene 2
Instead of getting the bus, Scott starts to walk after a while he starts to look back and notices that the man is following him, Scott gets scared and starts to quicken his pace. Here is the break in the equilibrium, taunting music emphasises and gives the effect of mixed feelings of fear, despair and panic.

Scene 3
Scott being desperate to lose his follower decides to cross the road. He doesn't look before he crosses and doesn't notice the car coming at him as he crossses. As the lights of the car are shining bright at Scott's face, he life starts to flash before his eyes, particulary the time he was robbed. He goes into a flashback about when he was mugged and held up against the wall and fears this will happen again. He returns to his senses and now starts to walk faster to the extent that he almost running. The man carries on chasing after Scott to return his wallet.

Scene 4
Scott realises the man is running after him, and fears for his life, with his gut instinct he turns down the next road he sees, in hope that he would lose the man. However he is stuck in a dead end, he starts to panick. He sees the man appear, adrenaline rushes through Scott's body, he realises this is it, the man is confused and gives Scott his wallet, Scott realises the error of his ways and says sorry to the man.

Scene 5
The man walks off, Scott is calmed down and opens his wallet. To his surprise he finds his wallet is completely empty, he runs out the dead end trying to find the man, but he's long gone. Devastated he throws his wallet on the floor and the film ends with the credits up.

Character Profiles

Man 1 (victim) Scott - This character is a typical sterotype of a victim of getting mugged, he's well dressed and is seen as a target, he doesn't show much confidence, he doesn't seem like a macho man, so would be easily targeted by "tough guys". A reason for his lowered confidence is that he has been previously mugged on the streets, so he does not enjoy walking alone. He is dressed in business wear with a shirt suit and tie. In the film he drops his wallet and is worried he is going to get attacked again, when he realises a tough guy is following him.

Man 2 (Tough man)- This character is following is following Scott, he seems intimidating as he's dressed rough with his hood up and seems streetwise, he looks suspicious and menacing a typical sterotype of a mugger.

Below are images of how the characters might look like.

Location Research

Train station - The starting shots is of Scott leaving the train station, this gives the impression of him having finished work and on his journey home.

Roads - The main part of the film takes place in some simple pedestrian roads. The character Scott is walking through these roads trying to try and lose sight of the the man following him. It will be preferable for us if these roads are not often busy for filming reasons which is why we have looked at the areas we have shown in pictures.

Mood Board

Research on existing products

I would say the genre for our film is thriller, because the man who is being followed, and the audience also do not know straight away why he is being followed, so this will cause a lot of suspense like a typical thriller film, it wont be completely this genre, we would try and add some comedic value to the film, to make our film different.

Audience feedback

Above is the results of the questionnaire, it shows that our main target audience is 21 to 30 year olds and the majority of the people that took the questionnaire watched more short films then documentaries, so we felt its good to our short film idea. The results show that the genre they were most interested in is comedy with action shortly behind, however danielles suspense idea got the most votes, so we are going to do her idea.

The audience came up with some interesting ideas that we did not think of to make the plot more interesting, this included making it humorous by making the man so scared he wet himself, a murder or even a gay kiss.

Changing our idea again (final)

Our group had a production meeting, to dicuss our thoughts and ideas, we said we would like all our pre production tasks finished before we got back to school after the half term so we can focuss on our shooting when we get back. We told our teachers about our haunted house idea, but they weren't keen on this idea as well as the previous ones. We have changed the idea yet again, still continuing with a short film. We made a brain storm and all camw up with different ideas:

My idea: I came up with the idea of a short horror film, this is about a haunted house. A man goes into a house and realises it is haunted and is scared. He hears a lot of different scary sounds such as taps dripping, creaky doors, creaky floor boards etc. There would would be different shots such as a point of view to show what the characters looking at and mid shots, we thought to use a shaky camera inspired by the movie paranormal activity.

Ainsley's idea: A film about a long race, this genre will be comedy as there are going to be a lot of funny events that happen throughout the film to distract the racers i.e tripping over things and being distracted by females assets. There would be 6 runners who are running for charity, this idea is different to mine so there are more of a variety of shots, since the location is outside we would use close ups, mid shots point of view and wide shots.

Danielle's idea: Is a short suspense thriller, a man drops his wallet on the street but does not realise, he is scared as he realises some guy is following him and doesn't understand why, really the other man is just returning his wallet. Over the shoulder, panning shots, close ups and cut away shots will be used for this.

New idea

We had a group meeting and decided to change our idea, We have decided to do a horror film. This is a completely different to our old idea which was previously a drama. This is a challenge starting all over again, but i think it can be done. The idea is set in a house, a "haunted house". We were thinking to use a lot of different diagetic sounds to create suspense such as the sound of taps dripping, floor boards creaking etc. I also thought of using pictures of a portrait and going back to the camera and the image changing.

Does post modernism apply to our media text?

Our media product does not challenge post modernism as the characters are all straight and there are males and females, however post modernism is striaght verses gays, males verse females.

Change in idea

We went to MRC, and went to take pictures for our poster. However when we told Mr Jarrett our idea, he wanted us to clarify what genre our film was. We told him that it was drama and he said he doesnt think this idea, really shows its a drama text, he thought this poster shows a more romantic dreamy genre. So he told us to we should come back with another idea. We decided to have the two girls on the poster facing back to back with a tense impression on their face looking down at the page, and at the bottom of the page there will be a picture of an arm with a bracelet, this shows that the bracelet plays a significant role in our movie. The two girls back to back shows the drama element.

Potential idea for poster

We have been looking at ideas of posters for our idea we thought above this poster:

We thought this idea would be good for our poster, because its quite simple and i believe shows that the girl is not completely happy with her boyfriend so i think this is suitable for our poster.

Tuesday 5 October 2010

Looking at other posters

We have been researching different film posters to see how a drama poster looks like so we can have a rough guide for us so we can create our poster.

Does our product support or challenge Marxist theory?

The marxist theory is the belief that capitalism is wrong and the world should be communist, marxist believe that the media is a way to control the proletarian (workers) I am not sure how this is linked to our film idea, but it is a good theory

Outline how our product incorporated the feminine mystique?

Our product does not focus much on the feminine mystique, as our product is short drama film, the main aspect of it is the confusion. There are two girls in the film talking about how much they like their boyfriends and end up fighting each other the misunderstanding of thinking their boyfriend is cheating on them. This shows a bit of the feminine mystique, because it shows that the girls think they need a man to make them happy.

The male gaze is also incorporated in the product, because the females are going to meet their boyfriends, so they want to look nice so they are wearing more revealing clothes in contrast to their flashback scene, because they want to look nice.

The female gaze is the theory that women objectif men gazing at them, but its said that they only copy the males behaviour, there is not much female gaze in our product that i am aware of.

Completed response to brief

I have completed my new response to brief that goes with the changes we made to our idea, we are still making a short film, but now the genre is drama. The next thing I aim to do is complete my treatment.

Taking pictures

On saturday the 19th of September our group went out to croydon and found a park and decided to take pictures of the scenery,we took a variety of different shots, such as zooming in, zooming out low angle shots. We think that this should be the scene of the girlfriends having their flashbacks, because these flashbacks are happy memories of the couples and we thought a park is a typical location couples may go. We intend to have the main scene in either a cafe or someones house, we will take pictures of this later when we have clarified our location, heres are the images below of the park flashback shots:

New idea

My group has now come up with a complete new idea, that we all agree on. Me, Danielle and Ainsley, this new idea fits in the genre of drama, we will have to redo our moodboard, treatment and response to brief which will not be a problem

Back to school

We've come back to school from our summer holiday and have reviewed our coursework ideas, and have decided to make a few changes, we felt that our previous idea was to complicated to created so we wish to make it simpler and would like to create a twist at the end. I have made a survey to see what type of ending our target audience would like.

Finishing psycho

We finished watching psycho in class and discussed how it used film noir, although i enjoyed psycho i don't think this would benefit our production as our group is not producing a film noir.

Wednesday 7 July 2010

Watching psycho

In miss jefferys double lesson we started watching the film psycho. This film is good for our group as my group has decided to do a short film, the genre we are doing is a romantic thriller, so psycho is a good film to look at for us as it is a similar genre to ours, so we can look at some of the effects they have used.

Research

Today we picked our groups of who we are going to work with, i have decided to work with Danielle and Ainsley. We looked through the specification and decided that we are going to create a short film. We started researching some short films which were all different genres, looking at the bbc film network website we have decided to do a short film on betryal.
